Energy flows freely throughout our body and mind when our seven chakras are open, balanced and aligned. This energy affects our mind, body and spirit in many different ways. When we learn to open and clear our chakras, our wellness improves and our bodies heal. Children are incredibly receptive to energy making the benefits of teaching chakras to kids so important.

Understanding chakras

Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means ‘circle’ or ‘wheel’. These circles or wheels are energy centres in our body corresponding to nerves and major organs. Imagine them as seven disks running from the top of your head to the bottom of your spine, continuously spinning and drawing energy into your body. If these energy centres are blocked, aches, pains, stiffness and even symptoms of emotional unrest can be experienced.

Chakras can be opened through many different techniques including breathing, visualisation, yoga, reiki and affirmations. When done with intent, you’re able to open and rebalance your chakras.

The seven chakras

Crown chakra
The crown chakra, or the Sahasrara, is located at the top of the head. It regulates spiritual connection and transformation. It represents the colour violet. If the crown chakra is blocked you may be feeling depressed, have learning difficulties and brain fog. If it is balanced you are intelligent, aware, wise and understanding.

Brow chakra – Third Eye
Our Third Eye chakra, or the Ajna, is located between the eyes. It is associated with your intuition and imagination. It represents the colour indigo. If the brow chakra is blocked you could have poor judgement, a lack of focus and poor imagination. If it is balanced you feel imaginative and intuitive. You’ll also have clear thoughts and vision.

Throat chakra
The throat chakra, or the Vishuddha, is located at the base of the throat. It is responsible for communication and expressing yourself. It represents the colour blue. If the throat chakra is blocked you may feel as though you can’t express yourself or speak out. You can feel misunderstood and you might not be a good listener. If it is balanced you express yourself confidently and are a clear communicator.

Heart chakra
The heart chakra, or the Anahata, is located at the centre of the chest. It is associated with compassion, love and trust. It represents the colour green. If the heart chakra is blocked you can feel a lack of empathy, bitter and hateful, as well as having trust issues. If it is balanced you feel loving, peaceful, compassionate and open.

Solar plexus chakra
The solar plexus chakra, or the Manipura, is located at the upper abdomen. It relates to the image you have of yourself. It represents the colour yellow. If you have low self-esteem your solar plexus chakra may be blocked. You can also feel powerless and inferior. If the solar plexus chakra is balanced you feel confident, in control and have a good self-image.

Sacral chakra
The sacral chakra, or the Svadhishthana, is located below the naval. It regulates our creativity, emotions and openness. It represents the colour orange. If the sacral chakra is blocked you can feel as though you have no creativity. You can also feel isolated. If the sacral chakra is balanced you feel creative, optimistic and open.

Base/Root chakra
The root chakra, or the Muladhara, is located at the base of the spine. It is associated with your spiritual balance and instincts. It represents the colour red. If the base chakra is out of balance you can feel anxious and unsure, fearful and ungrounded. If it is balanced you feel safe, secure, centred and grounded.

The benefits of teaching chakras to children

The energy flowing through your child’s chakras has a direct impact on how they think, feel and act. If your child can understand their chakras, they’ll understand how to be aware of them and make changes to open these chakras back up.

They’ll be able to balance their emotions and therefore bring balance into their lives. If they feel this balance mentally, spiritually and physically, they’re able to make better decisions for themselves, enabling self-care.

Supporting your child to understand their wellbeing and take care of themselves is an extraordinary tool. It helps them grow, have trust within themselves and in turn feel more in tune with their bodies. They’ll have a better understanding of themselves and feel more connected with their peers, family and friends.

For example, if your child is aggressive to others and blames them for their own mistakes or choices, you can support them by encouraging self-esteem. This imbalance is related to the solar plexus chakra.

How to balance a child’s chakras

There are many different ways to help balance a child’s chakra and they can be taught from any age.

A sacred space
A child should have their own sacred space. A space where they feel safe and comfortable to express their true self without judgement or fear. They can use this space to meditate, practice yoga or even listen to music. This will help them feel secure, relaxed and happy.

If your child is practicing yoga, they are already opening up and balancing their chakras. If your child has never tried yoga before, this can be a great way to introduce them to it, helping them connect with themselves and understand how energy affects their wellbeing. Afterall, wellbeing is essential for leading a happy, healthy life.

Meditation can help children stay present, release negative energy and as a result be open to accepting positive energy. It can be one of the best ways to expand their energy and open up their chakras. There are many self-guided meditation podcasts or videos available online. As a general rule, one minute for every year of age can be used as a time duration for meditation.

Just like meditation, hypnosis allows us to connect with our chakra’s with the intention to clear and expand bringing balance and flow to our lives.  Hypnosis will take you that one step deeper, allowing our sub conscious mind to completely open and ready to make the positive change we seek.

Each chakra has a frequency that vibrates at specific rates. Listening to these sounds can help raise your child’s energy. Think of it as sound healing.

Positive affirmations or statements can be a very powerful tool for opening up to love and compassion. Your child can say them out loud or in their mind to help increase positive energy. An example of a positive affirmation could be, ‘I can achieve anything I set my mind to’.

Expressing gratitude for all the things you’re grateful for attracts happiness, health and peace into your life. They can be visualised or written down at the start of the day.

Rainbow colours
Each chakra releases a different colour and can be balanced by wearing or experimenting with a rainbow of colours. Encouraging your child to wear colourful clothing or eat colourful food will teach them how to use colour to heal. They’ll intuitively begin to understand the way each colour makes them feel.

Reiki meets you where you are at, helps whatever you are going through easier. Through energy reiki will help you to release what is holding you back and will clear any blockages not only in your chakras but your whole being.
